Last weekend, the ‘105 Stadium’ of Rimini was the venue for the latest edition of the annual event paying homage to Marco Simoncelli, who would have celebrated his birthday on Monday.
Some 3,000 fans attended the gathering, which has been held every year since Simoncelli lost his life in 2011. He was remembered with music, humour and some emotional moments to mark what would have been the 27th birthday of the popular Italian.
Those in attendance were thanked by Simoncelli’s parents, Paolo and Rosella, as well as their son’s girlfriend Katie Fretti and team owner Fausto Gresini, with all proceeds from the event going to the Marco Simoncelli Onlus Foundation.
In addition, the presentation of the Sic 58 Squadra Corse team also took place, with this being a new outfit established as a venture by Paolo Simoncelli thanks to a collaboration between Honda Italy and the Gresini team. It will compete in two tiers of the national Italian CIV championship, with Italian 125 champion Tony Arbolino and Kevin Sabatucci competing in the PreGP category while Mattia Casadei and Nicodemo Matturro race in Moto3.
