Less than two weeks after the crash which broke his right collarbone during qualifying for the Grand Prix of Americas, Karel Abraham will attempt to return to MotoGP™ at this weekend’s Gran Premio bwin de España in Jerez.
The Cardion AB Motoracing rider was forced to sit out the inaugural race in Austin, Texas following his coming together with GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Bryan Staring on the Saturday, which saw the former land heavily on his right shoulder. He was transported to hospital in Austin and was soon ruled out of the race on Sunday.
Having had a short convalescence, the 23-year-old is keen to return to action.
“I want to get back on the track as soon as possible,” Abraham says on Tuesday. “We will try to ride in Jerez and we’ll see what happens. The recovery is in progress, but my doctor found some complications; the biggest one is that the scar is overgrowing into the collarbone. I’m trying to rehabilitate, but it’s very painful.
“But I have been assured that there isn’t any risk of aggravating the injury. The most important thing is to avoid crashing (and landing) on the hurt shoulder. I will stay focused and hope to be able to ride the whole weekend and to finish the race.”
Last year in Jerez, then racing for his family-run team on a prototype bike as opposed to the current CRT setup, Abraham finished in 17th position from 11th on the grid.
