Alex Criville has expressed his point of view over the last-corner collision between Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo in this month’s Spanish Grand Prix.
Heading into the final bend at Jerez, which had ironically been named after Lorenzo just a day before, the world champion was pushed wide following contact from Marquez. Criville, then with for the same Repsol Honda Team for which Marquez currently rides, had crashed out of the lead on the same corner following a battle with teammate Michael Doohan in 1996.
"Well, you have to say that Marc went into the corner too fast and he touched Lorenzo," Criville, title winner of 1999, explained to motogp.com during the launch of the Andreani-MHS company headed up by MotoGP™ crew chief Juan Martinez.
"For me, though, it was nobody’s fault. Marc was riding too fast and Lorenzo confidently, not knowing Marc was too close. I won at Jerez three times and you know that you have to close that door at the last corner on the last lap, or the guy behind will pass you. That’s how the situation is."
